Close the Door

When one door closes, another one opens.”

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve either heard this phrase directed at me, or I’ve uttered this phrase to comfort someone else.  It’s almost automatic, isn’t it?

Lost job?  “When one door closes, another one opens.”

Missed opportunity? “When one door closes, another one opens.”

This phrase is even used in anticipation of loss.

“You know, they are laying off at my job right now.”

“Well, just remember, when one door closes, another one opens.”

Words of comfort given to those who are in a state of panic at the prospect of being jobless or losing an opportunity they thought was for them.

This morning, I thought about the kind of doors that open when the one you’ve been relying on suddenly closes.

Sometimes we walk through the wrong doors.

Sometimes, that door opens and, instead of just visiting for a season…you find yourself staying, even if everything in your spirit is telling you to turn around and walk away.

Sometimes, the financial comfort of what lies beyond the wrong door keeps you trapped in a world where your purpose can’t manifest.  You’re so busy being what everyone else needs…you don’t have time to think about what you need.

Suddenly the life you wanted to live seems out of reach as you are constantly grasping the desperate hands of those who are reaching out to you…draining you of your dreams and crushing your spirit.

“When one door closes, another one opens.”

This is great for those experiencing an unwanted loss…but what about those of us who need to lose something and just don’t know how?

Close that damn door.

Close. It.

Slam it.

Lock it.

Someone needs to hear this.

It’s me.  I am somebody.

It’s you.  You’re also somebody.

Sometimes you have to close a door to open another.

I’m going to say it again.

Sometimes you have to close a door to open another.

YOU close it.

YOU.

Going forward, this is how I’m looking at anything that doesn’t align with my purpose.

Going forward, this is how I’m looking at anything that doesn’t align with my purpose.

Why are you standing in a space that kills dreams and stifles purpose?  Stand firm within yourself and take control of your own destiny.

You don’t have to wait.

Close that damn door.
